What’s Being Done?
Last year, Border Force seized 449 million cigarettes and 236 tonnes of tobacco at the UK’s ports and airports*.
Within the UK, illicit tobacco remains the top product investigated by Trading Standards departments. Every week Trading Standards officers, supported by the Police and HMRC, are investigating, seizing and prosecuting cases of illicit tobacco sales**.
To date, JTI have removed 32 tobacco gantries from retailers convicted of selling illicit tobacco products.
This year JTI have supported three private prosecutions, the most recent in September, when a retailer was charged for offences uncovered in a series of mystery shopper investigations.
