What is the menthol & capsule cigarette ban?
The Menthol and Capsule Ban is the phase of the European Tobacco Products Directive (EUTPD2) that first came into effect in May 2016.
Which products are affected by the ban?
Menthol and Capsule cigarettes are affected by the ban.
Capsule cigarettes contain one or more small capsules within the filter tip which can be ‘burst’ by squeezing between the fingertips, which enables an adult smoker to change the flavour of the cigarette by releasing the mentholated flavouring contained inside the capsule(s).
The Menthol Ban also applies to hand-rolling tobacco with mentholated filters or papers if they are all supplied together in the same product. However, the law still permits mentholated papers and filters to be sold, as long as they are sold separately from hand-rolling tobacco products.
WHEN DID THE MENTHOL & CAPSULE CIGARETTE BAN COME INTO FORCE?
Then ban came into effect from 20th May, from which date all Menthol & Capsule cigarettes became banned from sale in both the UK and EU.
WHY ARE MENTHOL & CAPSULE CIGARETTES BEING BANNED?
The ban under the Tobacco Products Directive is aimed at decreasing smoking in the European Union.
